SEER2 Vs SEER

SEER and SEER2 use the same method of calculating energy efficiency.  The difference is the conditions under which the test is performed.  The static pressure of the airflow was 0.1 inches of water column for SEER and is 0.5 inches of water column for SEER2. The basic calculation of the BTUs of cooling divided by the energy comsumed in watts remains the same. (British Thermal Units, when discussing cooling, is the amount of heat energy that can be removed from the home by the cooling system.) The equipment takes more energy to cool the same space, at a higher static pressure, so the resulting Energy Efficiency appears to be less when using the same equipment. The static presssure of 0.1″ w.c. isn’t a realistic number and so the people in charge of these standards decided to use a more realistic static pressure of 0.5″ w.c. to simulate the real world.
SEER = Total cooling output (BTUs) / Total electric energy input (watt-hours) with .1 inches of water column of static pressure.
SEER2 = Total cooling output (BTUs) / Total electric energy input (watt-hours) with .5 inches of water column of static pressure.
Static pressure in an HVAC systems is the measurement of how much resistance there is to airflow in the ducts and other components.
.1 inches of water column is a very low and unrealistic static pressure.
.5 inches of water column is a more realistic measure of static pressure.
As you can see, they are measuring the amount of energy consumed at a higher resistance to air flow as compared to the final product (BTUs of Cooling)

The point that we are trying to get across is that the more accurate number, (SEER2), gives the consumer a better idea of what they are actually getting.

EER2 Vs EER

So, we’ve removed the S and now its something else.  The S stands for “Seasonal”, so when we remove it we are left with Energy Efficiency Ratio.  EER is simply the same ratio as SEER but over the entire year.  To get the added 2 in EER2 we can say the same thing as with SEER vs SEER2.  The 0.1″w.c. is now 0.5″w.c. so the energy usage is higher to achieve the same goal and give the consumer a more accurate idea of the energy efficiency of their system.
